Since 2010Founded as OnTarget Leads, Lithium Marketing since 2014

Our story

Started in 2010 because good businesses kept getting bad marketing advice.

still the reason we do this

Kurt Schell founded the business in 2010 as OnTarget Leads, out of a simple frustration: too many good service businesses were getting bad marketing advice, wrapped in hype, vanity metrics and jargon designed to obscure rather than clarify. He built the business on simple plans, honest reporting and results measured in calls and booked jobs.

In 2014 the company became Lithium Marketing. Kurt brings more than 20 years of digital marketing experience across SEO, pay-per-click and conversion rate optimization, from his own projects to multi-channel campaigns for companies generating over $100 million in revenue. As co-founder he oversees operations and makes sure every part of a client’s program is built to produce calls, leads and revenue.

In 2018 DJ Van Zanten joined as co-founder and brought a client-first consulting approach that changed how Lithium works with owners. DJ runs every strategy call. He works one on one with owners to understand their goals, find the revenue opportunities and map a simple plan, turning marketing concepts into clear steps that bring in more calls, quotes and booked jobs. Allison McKenney, our account manager, keeps that plan moving day to day.

Today Lithium Marketing is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, with a team in Portland, Bend and Seattle and clients across the United States, from Portland plumbers to a glass company that has served the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 1946. The websites we build are live and linked in our portfolio, and the results are printed in our case studies.

How we work

What we believe, and what it means for you.

Lithium Marketing was built as the opposite of the hype-and-jargon agency. Here is what that looks like in practice, before you sign and every month after.

Prices published up front

Four of our five services have a published price, from $179 a month for the AI receptionist to a typical $5,000 for a website, and AI automation is quoted after a free discovery call. You see the numbers before the first call.

Six-month starting term

Service agreements typically start with six months, then renew monthly with 30 days’ cancellation notice, and the AI receptionist has no contract at all. We would rather earn your business every month with results than lock you in.

A co-founder on the first call

Your strategy call is with co-founder DJ Van Zanten. DJ maps the plan with you, and Kurt Schell oversees the work behind it.

Revenue, not just rankings

We focus on revenue, not just rankings. Reporting tracks qualified leads, cost per lead and return on ad spend, the numbers tied to your revenue, in plain English.

You own what we build

You own your domain, hosting account, WordPress install and content. If you ever leave Lithium, the website leaves with you. We build business assets, not rented templates.

We guarantee the work

No reputable agency guarantees a specific ranking, because Google controls rankings. What we guarantee is the work: fixes shipped on time, campaigns built properly and reports that show what changed and why.

our mission

Help great service businesses grow profitably.

Honest strategy, excellent creative and measurable performance, judged by calls, quote requests and booked jobs.

The team

The people you’ll talk to.

Two co-founders and an account manager known for fast replies. DJ maps your plan, Kurt oversees the strategy and operations behind it, and Allison keeps the work moving every day.

FAQ

What owners ask us first.

DJ Van Zanten

Still curious?

Call (503) 766-5964 or email [email protected].

Who will I work with day to day?

Allison McKenney, your account manager, is your day-to-day contact, and both co-founders stay involved. DJ Van Zanten runs your strategy call and maps the plan, Kurt Schell oversees operations and the work behind it, and Allison coordinates launches, relays performance updates and answers quick questions.

Do you work with businesses outside Portland?

Yes. Lithium Marketing is headquartered in Portland, with a team in Portland, Bend and Seattle, and works with service businesses across the United States. Dixie Glass is on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, for example, and Biermann Plumbing & Heating serves western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut. We meet every client by video, and project work runs on Zoom, email, shared documents and Loom videos.

How soon will I see results?

It depends on the service. Google Ads campaigns typically show initial results within the first week. With SEO, technical fixes usually move within 30 days, local and long-tail rankings typically take 60 to 90 days, and revenue compounds from month four. A new website goes live six to nine weeks after kickoff.

How will I know it is working?

You get monthly reporting tied to leads and revenue. Reports track qualified leads, cost per lead and return on ad spend, so you see what changed and why.

Is there a long-term contract?

Not a long one. Service agreements typically start with six months, then renew monthly with 30 days’ cancellation notice, and the AI receptionist has no contract and can be canceled anytime. Website projects are a fixed proposal agreed after a 30-minute discovery call. We would rather earn your business every month with results and plain reporting.

Does the first call cost anything?

No, the first call is free, and it is with co-founder DJ Van Zanten. It is a 30-minute strategy call, and you leave with a prioritized plan whether you work with us or not.
