When to redesign

How do you know it’s time to redesign your website?

When the site starts losing you calls, not when it turns a certain age. Any one of these six signs is reason enough to look closer.

1

It drags on a phone

Open your site on your phone, away from the office Wi-Fi. If the first screen takes its time, a buyer with a problem will not wait for it, and the ad click or search visit that brought them is wasted.

2

Calling you takes a hunt

The number hides in the footer, the quote form wants a life story and nothing on the first screen says what to do next. Someone with an emergency does not go looking.

3

The business outgrew the site

You added services, crews or towns, and the site still describes the company you were five years ago. Buyers searching for the newer work never find out you do it.

4

Google has to guess what you do

No schema markup, one thin page covering every service and URLs nobody planned. Search engines and AI answers can only send buyers to a business they can read.

5

Your best proof is somewhere else

The reviews live on Google and the project photos live on your phone. A site that shows neither near the call button asks a stranger to take you on faith.

6

The platform says no

Greenlight Titles was stuck on a GoDaddy site that would not accept tracking code. When a builder blocks tracking, new pages or a better form, the platform is running your marketing.

What changes

What a website redesign agency should fix first.

Lithium starts with the calls and quote requests the site has to bring in. Colors and fonts come later.

A first screen that loads

Heavy old pages are replaced with lighter ones aimed at Google’s Core Web Vitals targets, so a buyer on a phone sees your offer before giving up.

A way to reach you everywhere

Tap-to-call sits on every screen and a quote button is always close by, so a buyer who is ready never has to scroll for your number.

One service, one page

Each service you sell gets a page of its own, linked to the related services so buyers and Google can move between them.

Proof beside the button

Your Google reviews and job photos sit right where a first-time visitor decides whether to pick up the phone.

Protecting your search traffic

Will a redesign cost you your Google rankings?

It can, if pages Google already ranks disappear or change address with nothing pointing to the new version. Visitors and search engines hit dead pages, and the traffic those pages earned has nowhere to go. A redirect map closes that gap. Ask any website redesign company what happens to your old URLs before you sign.

Porter Sealcoating & Paving held on to its rankings when its new site launched, because Lithium redirected 163 old URLs. Logins can break in a switch too. When Greenlight Titles moved to WordPress, its customers kept signing in to their portal without a gap.

No one can promise where rankings settle after a launch, ours included. What we guarantee is the work.

Launch checklist

What runs before the switch.

  • Search Console and GA4 reviewed in week one for the pages that bring in traffic and calls
  • A permanent 301 redirect from each old URL to its new page
  • Speed and structured data tested on the new pages before go-live
  • Tracking and Search Console set up and tested on the new site

Redesign case study

Dixie Glass left Wix, and its Google Ads conversions rose 76%.

Dixie Glass, a Mississippi Gulf Coast glass company since 1946, came to Lithium on an outdated Wix site. Lithium replaced it with a WordPress site made to convert and rebuilt the Google Ads account around proper conversion tracking. The ads produced 66 conversions one January and 116 the next, with ad spend up only 2.29%.

Timeline

How long does a website redesign take?

Budget six to nine weeks for a typical redesign, kickoff to launch. A large site, or one spread across several locations, can take longer.

  1. 1Week 1

    Learn the business

You walk us through the work you most want to win and what a new customer is worth to you.

  2. 2Week 2

    Keep, merge or retire

Each old page gets a verdict: keep it, fold it into a stronger page or retire it behind a redirect. The new sitemap and page briefs are built from those calls.

  3. 3Weeks 2 to 3

    Design rounds

You get desktop and phone designs to mark up, and they go through revisions until you approve them.

  4. 4Weeks 3 to 6

    Build

The WordPress pages go up with their forms and any integrations your business runs on.

  5. 5Weeks 6 to 7

    Switch over

The new site goes live once every item on the launch checklist above is done.

  6. 6After launch

    The first 90 days

Lithium checks lead quality, conversion rate, search impressions and load speed at 30, 60 and 90 days, then tells you what moved.

Pricing

What does a website redesign cost?

A typical Lithium redesign is $5,000, and mapping your old URLs to the new pages is part of that price. About nine in ten of the sites Lithium builds land on that figure.

$5,000

typical redesign

A large old site, or a new one that needs more tracking, content or connected tools, gets a fixed proposal from a 30-minute discovery call.

“Lithium has moved us to page 1 in Google search organically. Prior to working with them we spent a huge part of our marketing budget on paid search. Website redesign was a great experience.”

Can you move my site off Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy?

Yes, Lithium moves service businesses off Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy onto WordPress, and your domain comes along, so customers still find you at the same address. You keep the domain, and the hosting account, WordPress install and content are all in your name.

Will the new design keep my logo and brand?

Yes, a Lithium redesign starts from the brand you already have. Mt Hood Insurance’s site uses the three sunset bands from its logo to divide its sections, and Gloudeman Electric’s homepage leads with the company’s own local awards and crew photos.

Will I need to update my Google Business Profile?

Your Google Business Profile usually needs only small changes after a Lithium redesign. The profile’s website link should point to the right page on the new site, and the business details on the profile should read exactly as they do on the site. Lithium lines those details up as part of the build.

What do you need from me during the redesign?

Lithium needs two things from you: decisions and access. Expect one round of feedback each week, plus logins for your domain and current site, and for Search Console, GA4 and call tracking if you use them.

Do you redesign websites for businesses outside Portland?

Yes, Lithium is headquartered in Portland and has replaced older websites for service businesses well beyond Oregon, including Dixie Glass in Mississippi and Gloudeman Electric in South Carolina. Design reviews happen over Zoom and email.
